The lamps were lit and a container with soft towels was readied.
"It's going to be a norther tonight."
Gweenie gathered up some sticks and looked worried. The Phantom often spoke of things she did not understand.
"What's dat?"
"You will soon see...."
They moved outside and down to the garden. The old one inspected the flowers, cut of snips and bits, and stuck them into the prepared container. Gweenie peered in and gasped, "THEIR ALIVE!"
"Yes, dear one, and I intend them to go on living."
With the snips and bits were small caterpillars. Their yellow, white and black stripes set them apart from the other critters Gweenie had watched in one of the special containers. They were clinging to the leaves and were moving very slowly.
The wind blew and there was that electrical snap. A sound that others often heard when the Phantom had to cloak quickly.
"What are you doing out on an evening like this?" called the neighbor. "This is not a day to be working with those flowers." He too peered into the container and watched for a moment. "AHHHH! Worms! So that is what has been eating them. Do you want some bug spray?"
"Noooooooooooo..." The Phantom within tried to stay calm. The Disco Wand twitched nervously in it's pouch. The wind seemed to whisper "boink him!"
"I planted these flowers so they COULD eat them."
"You planted flowers for the worms to eat."
"Yessssssss... and they are NOT worms. They are baby butterflies. Monarchs even." The neighbor watched for a moment longer and then walked off shaking his head.
"I still think you should have boinked him," whispered Gweenie.
"It would have been a pleasure, but he is not of our world."
"And not too smart for a human."
"Nay, not many of them are." The two shivered and inspected the leaves until they thought they had all the babies and then hurried back into the warmth of the castle.
