There were leaves rustling in the back seat of the car. Gweenie was not used to hearing such sounds coming from the one who found her years ago... She had hidden under the leaves since they had passed the wreck. A rental truck had slammed head on into the overpass. She could smell death. Now, the leering music confused her even more.
"Hello darkness, my old friend
I've come to talk with you again
Because a vision softly creeping
Left its seeds while I was sleeping
And the vision that was planted in my brain...
Still remains...
Within the sound of silence"
The Old One hissed and muttered about not knowing WHO they were and WHAT she had become and WHERE the whole world was going anyway. Going "back home" got to be more taxing each time.
"In restless dreams I walked alone
Narrow streets of cobblestone
'Neath the halo of a street lamp
I turn my collar to the cold and damp
When my eyes were stabbed by the flash of a neon light
That split the night
And touched the sound of silence"
It was odd to hear one who's hearing was so impaired speak of silence like a friend. Didn't she hate not knowing what people said or missing the meaning of most of a conversation?
"Fools," said she, "you do not know
Silence like a cancer grows..."
Gweenie jumped at the suddenness of the last statement and held out the Cocoa Puffs box. She blinked her eyes and whispered, "Dey do not know..." The Old One blinked too, and then smiled.
"Thanks... I needed that!" The darkness lightened and the image of the hideous wreck faded and the two sang out as they traveled onward...
"Ober dee riber and twru dee woods..."
