She wandered over the rocks and picked at the shells lodged in the cracks and crevices. Each shell held some story. Beautiful and unique, but something died so that beauty could wash ashore.
"If only time could stand still, there are moments I could live in forever..."
Some shells were smashed and cracked, some were only small fragments of their former lives, and others were worn and faded, their luster lost.
"As you are I once was, as I am you will soon become..."
Stopping a moment to peer into a hole that was not being tossed by the surf, there were amazing things in the cold and harsh water. They looked like sea flowers. Some moved about. Little creatures darted so quickly that they could not be identified.
"They are only with you a little while. They are not yours to hold forever..."
She cried softly...
"It takes love to them go, love will help them return..."
She walked over a small sandbar. The tide was out so far now that her sneakers didn't take on water. There were more shells. Some of these moved. They snapped shut or pulled a door closed behind them. Sometimes little legs and feelers waved frantically before retreating into the darkness and protection.
"A place with no day or night and time passes slowly..."
Time... she had forgotten and she sloshed over the sandbar back to the safety of the rocky beach. Looking over her shoulder, she wished she could remain out there, but she had not gills and the evening was getting colder.
"If the true feelings of another were truly revealed, would it change the other person? Should it?"
So, she turned her back to the sun and faced the cold wind and went back to the home where it was warm and there would be light. The day was over.
"There are so many good things that we must live through and then forget..."
